Driven by Passion: My Path to Becoming a Doctor

My name is Srijan Singh, and I am a fourth-year medical student at the University of Galway, Ireland. I am also a Student Ambassador for the School of Medicine and Year Representative.

I began my journey into medicine knowing I wanted to become a psychiatrist, fully aware that it would demand immense passion and commitment. I sat the entrance exam three times, each time scoring in the top 10% nationally, yet not securing a spot. Despite the setbacks, I never lost hope, and I am so grateful to my past self for not giving up.

Medicine has been a blessing to have as both my passion and my career. It not only provides security and respect but allows me to do what I value most — connecting with people. It gives me the chance to see life from new perspectives, gain insight into others’ experiences, learn from them, and share my own.

To me, understanding and empathising with others is an essential part of both community and society, and I’m grateful that my profession not only allows but expects that of me. Throughout my time in medical school, I’ve had the privilege of meeting countless patients and following them through their care. Each experience has shaped my growth, both personally and professionally.

As a Student Ambassador and Year Representative, I have also had the opportunity to connect with the wider student body, not only as a friend but as a trusted and supportive figure, listening to them and representing their voices.

Being part of The Apprentice Doctor has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I joined the role through the recommendation of someone who remains an inspiration and role model to me. Not a single moment has gone by where I haven’t felt excited about what lies ahead. Every aspect of this journey has helped keep me motivated and inspired to become the best version of myself — both as a person and as a future doctor.

To all students considering a career in medicine, I want to say that if passion drives you, it is your commitment, dedication, and perseverance that will carry you to your goal. The desire to achieve can only be fulfilled when you have the courage and determination to never give up.
