"So You Want to Be a General Practitioner (Medical Doctor)..."
Let's face a fact - you want to become a medical doctor because you love people; you love working with people and you have a heart for people who are suffering.
Although medicine does offer careers for so called "task orientated" personalities, a GP works with people almost ALL of the time and in the final analysis needs to be a "people-person"!
What is a Medical Doctor (General Practitioner)?
A medical doctor is a person who has completed formal training at an approved medical school, has received a medical qualification at such an institution and has satisfied all the requirements called for by the professional healthcare registration board of country/state they are practicing in.
A general practitioner devotes his practice to assessing and treating general medical ailments. A general practitioner typically practices in a suburban setting and takes care of the health of families living in this area.
The GP diagnoses and treats a large variety of diseases and conditions but does have the option of referring certain conditions to a specialist for further investigation and management.
How can I become a medical doctor?
If you are in high school, it is essential that you excel in the following subjects:
- Mathematics
- Science (physics and chemistry)
- Biology
Additional optional subjects to study:
- Psychology.
- A business subject
- Communication
- Additional language/s (in keeping with the languages spoken in the region where you intend to practice medicine).
In most countries a pre-medical science degree is a requirement when applying to pursue studies at a medical school. Even if it is not a necessity in your country, it is highly recommended that you consider completing a science degree before applying to join a training program at a medical school.
What are the attributes that I need to become a medical doctor?
- A strong desire to become a medical doctor. This is very important. Do not pursue medicine as a career if you are in any measure unsure about your decision.
- Perseverance.
- Embarking on a career that will require formal studies of 6 years or longer requires high levels of perseverance.
- Love and respect for human beings (patients and their relatives).
- Respect for life.
- A keen interest in the structure and functioning of the human body.
- The ability to work under pressure and within time constraints.
- The ability to work as a member of a wider healthcare team.
- The ability to work for long hours continuously.
- The ability to keep your concentration for extended periods of time.
- You need to like working with your mind and your hands.
- You need to like working with people, love serving people?and mankind in general.
- An enquiring mind - always trying to find out more about interesting subjects.
- Intelligence. If you really struggle with your studies despite daily putting in considerable effort, you may do well to submit yourself for psychological assessment to ascertain if you have the intellectual ability to becoming a doctor.
Do not be put off by a tendency towards fainting, nausea, or an aversion for blood or injured people. Over a period of time you will get used to it without the tendency to react negatively!
Benefits in following a medical career:
- Fulfillment. A medical doctor experiences intellectual fulfillment in an environment where people are being helped.
- Flexibility. The opportunity to follow a number of different careers within the general field of medicine. A researcher at university, a successful private practitioner as a GP, a hospital medical doctor, a medical advisor to a healthcare organization or a medical specialist are some of the career options that the field of medicine has to offer.
- Financial security. Medical doctors in most countries worldwide are in the upper 15 percent of earners when compared with other careers and professions.
- The opportunity to serve people. Being a medical doctor allows you to dedicate your life towards serving other people!
- Status and respect. Medical doctors enjoy a high level of status in the communities where they work and live.
- Challenges. Medical doctors are faced with diagnostic and treatment challenges on a daily basis.
- Variety. People, diseases and medical conditions are all interesting variables in the doctor's life ensuring that a doctor's life is almost never boring.
- Mobility. Doctors are not tied to their desks and career opportunities are available worldwide.
- Relationships. As a family practitioner, you will be able to build long-term satisfying doctor-patient as well as friendly relationships with a large number of families and individuals within the community that you are serving.
General Practitioner doctors have the option to further their studies in a specific field of special interest. This will require an additional number of years studying as an intern at a training institution associated with an academic hospital. It is strongly recommended that you practice as a general practitioner for a number of years before considering pursuing studies towards specializing in one of the specialty fields of medicine/surgery.
Disadvantages of a medical career:
- It requires a long and difficult study period with long and irregular hours of study in addition to practical and clinical sessions.
- Working hours are usually long (including after-hours calls) and this may put strain on marriage/family relationships. Disciplined time management is of utmost importance!
- In some countries, the risk of unreasonable medico-legal claims may exercise enormous psychological stress on a doctor.
- It takes a number of years to build a private practice that will be able to sustain you and your family economically.
- Your personality profile must be able to psychologically deal with the occurrence of complications as well as suffering and death as part your work.

Most doctors, at the end of their practice lifetime, would vouch for the fact that the advantages of a medical career outweigh these disadvantages by far. Medicine offers an individual the prospect of an enormously satisfying career and a fulfilling life!
Until next time,

University courses?

I'm just about to start year 12 and after doing well in my GCSE's I know that I still want to be a GP, (I got straight A's and A*'s). But the thing that's confusing me when I look at university courses online is deciding what actual course you need to do! There are loads of courses with similar titles, is "General practise and primary care" the one I need to look into? Thanks.

Always had it in me

I have always had it at the back of my mind mind to pursue medicine due to the nature of the job after graduating, and how always in demand it is to be a doctor.
But the money, competition and my confidence with my GCSE grades stopped my at my tracks.
Now in 2nd year at uni and I'm not enjoying what I do which is Financial Economics. Wish to leave it as soon as possible to chase the career of my dreams. What do you suggest I do?

Hi there, this websites provided me with quite a bit of knowledge However, I'm in Year 11 in England and decided on which A levels to do. I am getting consistent A*'s in Physics and Chemistry but A's in Biology. I was wondering which A levels to choose; as I am doing maths, chemistry and don't know if it will be too much pressure doing all three sciences, especially as the grades I require a A's. I could do with some guidance about getting into medical school. Please point me in the right direction, much appreciated.

Hopefully.....

Hi, Im currently in Year 10 and am wondering about what to do in university in order to become a GP. My mother is chronically ill and my brother has psychosis. So i have an ambition, but i dont know how to reach it.
My other brother is also going into medicine and is going to study Bio-medicine for 3 years in university. He told me that it is needed in order to specialise in a certain area of medicine. Is that true?
I also know what choices i am going for in college- Biology,Chemistry,Maths and Physics but are these the right choices?
I am acheiving very high grades in all of my lessons and have never received a grade below an A. So i know it will be no problem for me.
I hope that you can help me see whether or not this plan is right or hopefully steer me in a better dirrection.
If you could give me any infomation or any links to helpful websites it would be much appreciated. My email is:

confusing options i want to be a peadiatrition

look im choosing my options as well and all the people in my school are doing thingslike drama dance because my school is specialised in drama, dance, media, music, art but im not very good at maths, english, science but im good at chemistry but i want to be a peadiatrist an their options are only sujects like: music(btec)drama(btec)etc....
so i want to do double science so i can get better but there isnt any of the double sciences so im thinkin of moving to a specialised science school , do you think it is worth it,also the only option their is is health an social care gcse or btec but i dont want to be a social worker or a nurse i want to be a peadiatrist.
HELP ME IM SCARED I WONT MAKE IT PLEASE.

Which GCSE options?

I want to become a GP, however I am not sure which year 9 options I should pick. I have all of the qualifications in the bullet points above and more, yet I need to know two questions.
Which options should I take?
Do I have to take English, because I am good at speaking in crowds and diagnosis, and open to learning, however I am bad at writing stories and that rubbish, do I have to take it to become a doctor?
Please respond soon and e-mail me at taywaysouthall@yahoo.co.uk.

GCSE

Most of these questions have been answered a number of times in the "Ask Dr Anton section", but in short:
Your A level grades are used to select candidates and are therefore more important than your GCSE grades. Universities have different specifications some require at least 5 A*'s other require more. Get more information of individual requirements on the university websites where you can look up the course requirements. Birmingham require 7 A*'s! Good GCSE grades are essential towards getting the best A level grades.

cheap ugg

Making such animals feel at home in strange surroundings is only a small part of the work of the 100-member staff. Constant efforts are made to ugg outlet show aquatic birds, plants and fish in the ecosystems they normally inhabit, rather than showing only the animals in isolation.

Unsure ...

hi doc, my name is Ruhi, i'm 14, and i'm in year 10. For my options, i was put on the highest pathway so i chose Geography, spanish and Triple award science (originally, i did Business Studies, my second choice, but then i asked for my first choice; which was this), but i'm worried if Spanish wasn't a good choice, (i didn't really have a choice to be honest; it was either french or spanish) as i really want to be a GP.
English, ICT and maths are my strongest subjects but my weak one is science (physics), any tips to improve? And what GCSE's do i need to get to go to a medical school?

I am a Freshman in Highschool. In middle school, I always did a really good job in science and always got an A. So, I was recomended for biology. Of Course I took the class. Well anyways I am getting a B in the class. I am trying really hard in that class. Do you think the grade in biology would hurt my chances of for medical school?

I am think of being a GP and i had decided this long ago, 1 am 16 and in highschool and last year i was one of the biggest slackers i know. i made average grades as a freshman ( C's and B's) and it has suvearly crippled my GPA (like a 2.8). i was still in Pre AP Bio, and working hard to bring that grade back up, but i do not know if Medical schools/College's will accpet me because i had such low grades last year, Plz inform me of if my grades are to low and i should just stop now or if i should keep going and hope for the best

Starting late in life

Dr. Anton,
I am 30 yrs. old, but I've always wanted to get into te medica; field. I started a program in high school that allowed us access to the cadaver labs and lecture halls in my home town. I put off going to college because I got married and started raising a family. I wanted to know just how many years would I have to invest to become a GP? And what prep courses should I take?
Thank you!

Become a doctor

Hi Sarah
To become a doctor, you need a firm science foundation!
Of course you can still become a doctor - but you may have to do consider a science degree before applying to medical school. Get the finer details from your career guidance teacher.
P.S. Use the "Ask Dr Anton" facility on this site. Unfortunately I am unable to correspond to all Apprentice Doctors per e-mail!

You have to include mathematics and science. I would recommend business studies - especially if you would like to practice privately one day... and for the rest - whatever tickles your fancy.

Hi M.S.

Due to limited time we cannot respond per e-mail, but you are welcome to use the "Ask Dr Anton" facility. You really need a lot of advice on a one-to-one basis - do you have a career guidance teacher at school? I suggest you find a responsible adult family member or teacher and let he/she assist you through this difficult time...

I became a doctor 5 years ago...It's such a pleasure. I have already purchased two BMW's, A brand new home for my parents, and many other things...On the plus side I only work 4 days a week and 3 hours each day that I work. I use to have a gpa of 2.5 something but in grade 12 i changed it around to a perfect 4.0 gpa after that the next 7 years were worth it.email me your thoughts at vijayhundal@hotmail.com
