Of course you can - do you have the time to add another looong academic program and career? Just guessing - but you are looking at another +-10 years of study...

Dr Anton

04.May.2009 01:03pm

why is it important to study physical science, biology, accountancy to become a doctor. i also plan to study maths 3 additional

tikka

04.May.2009 01:17pm

hI tikka
Physical science
Optics to understand the eye and vision.
Gas pressures and gas laws to understand the lungs and respiration.
Viscosity and fluids - to understand the heart and blood flow.
Shall I continue?
Biology forms the foundation of studying more specialized life forms...
Accountancy is not essential - but a nice to have if you want to succeed in private practice.
See my answer on previous question about the importance of maths.

03.May.2009 05:14pm

What do radiologist typically do besides take X-rays, and how long does it take to become one?

mac

04.May.2009 12:44am

Hi Mac
Most X-rays are taken by radiographers.
A radiologist is a medical specialist that uses X-rays and ultrasound technology, using medical imaging equipment like MRI, computed tomography (CT Scans), to assist other doctors in figuring out patients' medical conditions. Radiologists interpret these images.

The radiologist also performs procedures as part of the interventional radiology doctrine. Examples include drainage of an cyst using ultrasound or CT Scan, stopping a bleed by blocking the vessel that is bleeding, extracting urinary stones, and treating aneurysms in the brain.

is it possible for me to become a doctor considering that i lack communication skills? on the other side, i excell in math and science subjects..how can i develop interpersonal skills? please help me.thx doc

shy

03.May.2009 04:55pm

Hi Shy
Of course you can develop your communication skills. During you clinical years your communication side will develop dramatically. Also keep in mind that you may choose a specialty that requires less communication skills - e.g. radiologist and pathologist (rather than psychiatry for instance).
Consider a short self study course:

To become a doctor that specializes in sports medicine do you still have to go to med school?
Thanks!

ronni

02.May.2009 03:58am

Well Ronni if you want to be a medical doctor sports medicine specialist - yes, you have to study medicine first, and then do the relevant residencies, but you can follow quite a number of other careers in this field via other degrees/qualifications - as shown on the link...

One more question about the calculus. Since I know med school is ridiculously competitive, if I get A's in all my other subjects but continue to get B's in calculus will I be OK?

V

30.Apr.2009 03:28pm

You will be fine.
Get good grades with the pre-medical school B degree.
Get a good score with the MCAT
Show some other activities like volunteer work at a hospital.
Other achievements in leadership etc.
Activities in charities
Cultural and sport achievements...

30.Apr.2009 06:56am

hey doctor i really want 2 become a gp wot do u have 2 pass in the uk 2 become a gp i only took one sceince subject chemisrty and maths do i still have a chance

kitty

30.Apr.2009 10:59am

Hi Kitty
That is a bit lean on the science subjects. You not only need to take as many science/maths subjects as possible, you need to excel in those subjects.
Consider an honors science degree before applying to medical school...

Dr Anton

29.Apr.2009 09:57pm

Hello,
I am at a JC currently planning on becoming a doctor. I love science of all kinds but when it comes to calculus I really lose interest (and don't do as well). My question is how essential is calc in becoming a doctor?

V

30.Apr.2009 10:54am

Your calculus abilities will be tested in the MCAT (medical schools admission test) - so it really is essential from that point of view.

Dr Anton

29.Apr.2009 11:59am

Hi, I am student in High school and I have to do a project and is is about doctors. So if any one of you can tell me. How doctors job is related to math? tnx

nasro

29.Apr.2009 01:29pm

Hi there Nasro
To become a doctor you need maths because:
1. The diagnostic process requires advanced skills in problem solving and logic thinking.
2. Doctors use formulas to establish a number of physiological criteria and pharmacological dosages.
3. You need maths to do advanced chemistry and physics.
3.1 You need to understand chemistry to understand the human body (large extremely complicated chemical factory)
3.2 Physiological processes work on the basis of physical laws - and thus the need to understand physics.
4. Maths helps the selection committee to select the sharpest candidates.

Dr Anton

28.Apr.2009 06:06pm

Thanks again for the reply Dr Anton. I was also curious to know what your opinions on the American Health system were in comparison to say, here in Britain do you think Healthcare should be free at the point of access?
Regards.

Tom

28.Apr.2009 04:29pm

Hi Dr, as much as I try in my A-levels I struggle in chemistry, but am better with other subjects. My question is will this hold me back greatly in a medical career or at university? Also your last post was fantastic!
Kind regards

Tom

28.Apr.2009 04:50pm

Hi Tom
The honest answer is that chemistry is important. Put in the extra hours and effort - and consider extra classes.
There is a lot of inorganic, organic and bio chemistry ahead of you if you want to become a doctor!

Dr Anton

28.Apr.2009 01:49pm

I'm from Malta, in Form 2, and I have to chose subjects for next year.I wish to become a doctor,and after wards,maybe an Optometrist,or a Pediatrition(a children's doctor).What subjects should I chose?

Alyssa

28.Apr.2009 02:46pm

Hi Alyssa
The basic priciple is that you should choose as many science and related sujects
Maths, biology, physics, chemistry etc.
(Apologies,I do not have much detail regarding how to become a doctor in Malta)
But please read:

nic

27.Apr.2009 11:51pm

Yes - become a doctor at Yale and then do 2 years of surgery and another 3 years of Urology residency. Just 2 posts per year though - so it is competitive!

Dr Anton

27.Apr.2009 03:28am

hi doc im 2nd year nursing student and doing pretty good in science and math course..i plan to change path and take pre med..my problem is im not good in english. im from philippines and still practicing my english. will it be hard for me to get in a pre

macuvex

27.Apr.2009 12:31pm

I don't think you will have too much trouble getting into a pre-medical school BDegree program.
The MCAT does include an English proficiency section - so focus in on improving you English as much as possible!

Dr Anton

26.Apr.2009 04:22pm

Hello Dr. Anton I am an excellent student in math and science my grade goes from 98-100 and my GPA is 4.0 do you think i would succeed in Med School?

Your next step is a pre-medical school Bdegree - you may major in a wide variety of subjects.

Dr Anton

24.Apr.2009 03:38pm

i graduated from a highschool that barely taught. i dont know much about science or biology. i want 2 become a medical doctor. eventually i will start classes in community college. what can i do b4 then 2 prepare please? thanks.

philly dan

24.Apr.2009 05:09pm

Selection to medical school is based primarily on your 4 year BDegree as well as the MCAT results.
Do things like volunteer work at a hospital, advanced first aid and basic life support.
You will have to try to catch up with especially the chemistry and physical science at CC if at all possible.
Getting selected for med school is highly competitive!

Dr Anton

23.Apr.2009 10:43pm

i am in school for a surgical technologist. when i graduate which will be next year i want to go to medical school. what do i have to do?

Amy

23.Apr.2009 05:00pm

Contact the career guidance section of your college/univ. and find out if your will get any credits for your current studies/qualification. I am fairly convinced that you will have to add quite a bit of studies to meet the selection criteria for applying to medical school - contact MCAS for more info...
You will have to add a fair amount of studies to get you formally prepared for the MCAT

Dr Anton

23.Apr.2009 01:42pm

What do I need to do to become a general practitioner?

Baby Phat

23.Apr.2009 04:45pm

Hi Baby Phat
To become a doctor you should read these 2 articles from the doc:

"How to Become a Doctor in the United States of America..."
All of the best!

Dr Anton

23.Apr.2009 10:55am

would being a cna help get you in to medical school?

Dr Anton

23.Apr.2009 09:32am

Doctor, I'm a software engineer frm India.I took maths, phy & chem in intermediate and Comp. Sci in Engineering.I realized my true calling is to serve as a doctor.Pls tell me how to become a doc & how many years will it take now.

ck

23.Apr.2009 04:50pm

Hi CK
I am unfortunately not familiar with the process of becoming a doctor in India - but the bottom line is if you had good grades, you will have to go through the application process of the medical school where you intend studying - of course they will guide you along the process.
In most countries it is a minimum of 7 years...

Dr Anton

23.Apr.2009 12:20am

Is a career as a paramedic a good choice? is the pay decent?

ronni

23.Apr.2009 04:41pm

Becoming a paramedic is indeed a great choice with each day full of excitement - salary depends on level of training and experience. The pay is unfortunately not comparable to that of the average doctor.

Dr Anton

22.Apr.2009 03:56pm

Hi Dr. Anton,

I'm in grade 9 and I was wondering if my marks are good enough; I was wondering if im on the right track:

math: 89% [overall]
science: 92% [midterms]
english: 88% [midterms]

Thanks !

Nia

22.Apr.2009 05:06pm

Hi Nia
Well done! Your marks are indeed excellent and you are definitely on the right track - keep it up!

Dr Anton

21.Apr.2009 02:49pm

dear doctor anton
I am want to become a doctor that dosen't involve operating but also dosen't take a long period of time to become one
thank you

gale

22.Apr.2009 12:32am

Well Gale As far as non-surgical disciplines are concerned - consider becoming a physician, radiologist, psychiatrist or neurologist.
Regarding a short study period I'm afraid that even the short residencies are still 3 or 4 years following your 7-8 years of studying to become a doctor!

Dr Anton

19.Apr.2009 02:28pm

Im from the UK but how important are extra-curriculars when applying for med schools?

hopestobeadoctor

19.Apr.2009 03:28pm

Most medical schools - if all equal will choose the candidate who has excelled in leadership, sport, culture, arts etc. and who has done a fair amount of community service of some sorts - especially voluntary hospital service.
But academic excellence is the top item on the selection list...

Dr Anton

19.Apr.2009 10:04am

wat subjects do i need to study to become a doctor ? also hw many years will i stay unversity to get a medical degree?

unchen

19.Apr.2009 11:26am

Hi Unchen
You need excellent grades in maths and as many science subjects as possible (biology, chemistry, physical science etc.)
Eight years.
The answer to your questions are in the following Letters from the Doc...
"So You Want to Be a General Practitioner (Medical Doctor)..." and
"How to Become a Doctor in the United States of America..."
At your age you may also consider working your way through our How to Examine Patients Course and Kit (see shop section)
All of the best!

Dr Anton

18.Apr.2009 05:01pm

I am in the midst of choosing my Grade 11 courses, and am wondering if Physics is a must. I am taking advanced Chemistry/Biology and Advanced Math/English, and I'm not sure if I can invest the extra time in Physics. Should I?

Greg

19.Apr.2009 11:34am

Hi Greg
There are so many physics priniples associated with the human body and medicine (just to mention a few):
Optics - the eye and vision
Mechanics and leverage - the skeleton and muscles
Viscosity - the flow of blood
Acoustics - the ear and hearing
X-rays - radiology
Also keep in mind that you will be competing with students who do have the "full package".

Dr Anton

17.Apr.2009 12:26am

i'm in highschool 11th grade and i have ok grades unfortunately they are only around an unweighted 3.0 what can i do to better my chances to get into SLU's Med school tract.

jt

17.Apr.2009 02:58pm

Hi Jt
Improve you grades by studying harder/smarter - or whatever it takes.
Do volunteer work at a hospital.
Any other achievements like sport, leadership, cultural etc?
Your entrance to medical school in the final analysis revolves around your MCAT and "premed" degree results.

Dr Anton

16.Apr.2009 11:37am

Im in Yr 8 and have been given my options lists but im not sure what courses to take for college and grades i need to go college all i know is that you need to go medical school if you want to become a pediatrician so plz help.??

Confusedchick

16.Apr.2009 04:15pm

Hi Confusedchick
The general rule is - take as many science subjects (chemistry, physical science and biology) as well as maths...
You have to aim for excellent grades.

Dr Anton

15.Apr.2009 05:31am

Doc in medicine is it correct if you persue it because of money or passion?

Nosicelo

15.Apr.2009 12:55pm

Nosicelo
I would say passion - keep in mind money is important, but should not be the primary motive...

Dr Anton

14.Apr.2009 12:17pm

And also, would it help or hinder me if I were to major in something other than a natural science? Political Science for instance? I know med schools want to be diverse, but is that too far off the mark?

Havnevik

14.Apr.2009 03:07pm

No not at all. Political science would be just fine!

Dr Anton

14.Apr.2009 12:14pm

How importaint are your math skills as opposed to your skills in science as far as getting into med school? I'm terrible at math but extrordinary in bio and chem. Is one more importaint than the other as far as scores and grades?

Havnevik

14.Apr.2009 03:05pm

Havnevik
The prescribed maths needed for the MCAT is very important - so you have to be good in both maths and the sciences!

Dr Anton

14.Apr.2009 10:23am

I really wanto be a doctor. If certain grades are required - will Uni's be lenient if your , say, an AB off entry requirements?

James

14.Apr.2009 03:06pm

James
The bottom line is: Universities don't have to be lenient - medicine is highly competitive and there are just so many good excellent grade candidates to choose from.

Dr Anton

13.Apr.2009 05:22pm

"Chemistry and maths are more important than biology and physics if you want to become a doctor." You said this in one of your prev posts. IS that really true?! Because I'm not very good at math! What do you need math/phy for?

ann

14.Apr.2009 02:58pm

Ann
Chemistry: The human body is one giant highly complicated chemical factory - to understand the human body one needs to understand the chemistry behind it!
Mathematics: Teaches you logic thinking - essential to making a good diagnosis and you need maths to do applied chemistry and physics.

Dr Anton

13.Apr.2009 10:33am

Happy Easteer :)
