why is it important to study physical science, biology, accountancy to become a doctor. i also plan to study maths 3 additional
tikka
04.May.2009 01:17pm
hI tikka
Physical science
Optics to understand the eye and vision.
Gas pressures and gas laws to understand the lungs and respiration.
Viscosity and fluids - to understand the heart and blood flow.
Shall I continue?
Biology forms the foundation of studying more specialized life forms...
Accountancy is not essential - but a nice to have if you want to succeed in private practice.
See my answer on previous question about the importance of maths.

What do radiologist typically do besides take X-rays, and how long does it take to become one?
mac
04.May.2009 12:44am
Hi Mac
Most X-rays are taken by radiographers.
A radiologist is a medical specialist that uses X-rays and ultrasound technology, using medical imaging equipment like MRI, computed tomography (CT Scans), to assist other doctors in figuring out patients' medical conditions. Radiologists interpret these images.
The radiologist also performs procedures as part of the interventional radiology doctrine. Examples include drainage of an cyst using ultrasound or CT Scan, stopping a bleed by blocking the vessel that is bleeding, extracting urinary stones, and treating aneurysms in the brain.

is it possible for me to become a doctor considering that i lack communication skills? on the other side, i excell in math and science subjects..how can i develop interpersonal skills? please help me.thx doc
shy
03.May.2009 04:55pm
Hi Shy
Of course you can develop your communication skills. During you clinical years your communication side will develop dramatically. Also keep in mind that you may choose a specialty that requires less communication skills - e.g. radiologist and pathologist (rather than psychiatry for instance).
Consider a short self study course:

One more question about the calculus. Since I know med school is ridiculously competitive, if I get A's in all my other subjects but continue to get B's in calculus will I be OK?
V
30.Apr.2009 03:28pm
You will be fine.
Get good grades with the pre-medical school B degree.
Get a good score with the MCAT
Show some other activities like volunteer work at a hospital.
Other achievements in leadership etc.
Activities in charities
Cultural and sport achievements...

kitty
30.Apr.2009 10:59am
Hi Kitty
That is a bit lean on the science subjects. You not only need to take as many science/maths subjects as possible, you need to excel in those subjects.
Consider an honors science degree before applying to medical school...
Dr Anton

Hello,
I am at a JC currently planning on becoming a doctor. I love science of all kinds but when it comes to calculus I really lose interest (and don't do as well). My question is how essential is calc in becoming a doctor?
V
30.Apr.2009 10:54am
Your calculus abilities will be tested in the MCAT (medical schools admission test) - so it really is essential from that point of view.

Hi, I am student in High school and I have to do a project and is is about doctors. So if any one of you can tell me. How doctors job is related to math? tnx
nasro
29.Apr.2009 01:29pm
Hi there Nasro
To become a doctor you need maths because:
1. The diagnostic process requires advanced skills in problem solving and logic thinking.
2. Doctors use formulas to establish a number of physiological criteria and pharmacological dosages.
3. You need maths to do advanced chemistry and physics.
3.1 You need to understand chemistry to understand the human body (large extremely complicated chemical factory)
3.2 Physiological processes work on the basis of physical laws - and thus the need to understand physics.
4. Maths helps the selection committee to select the sharpest candidates.

Hi Dr, as much as I try in my A-levels I struggle in chemistry, but am better with other subjects. My question is will this hold me back greatly in a medical career or at university? Also your last post was fantastic!
Kind regards
Tom
28.Apr.2009 04:50pm
Hi Tom
The honest answer is that chemistry is important. Put in the extra hours and effort - and consider extra classes.
There is a lot of inorganic, organic and bio chemistry ahead of you if you want to become a doctor!

Selection to medical school is based primarily on your 4 year BDegree as well as the MCAT results.
Do things like volunteer work at a hospital, advanced first aid and basic life support.
You will have to try to catch up with especially the chemistry and physical science at CC if at all possible.
Getting selected for med school is highly competitive!

Contact the career guidance section of your college/univ. and find out if your will get any credits for your current studies/qualification. I am fairly convinced that you will have to add quite a bit of studies to meet the selection criteria for applying to medical school - contact MCAS for more info...
You will have to add a fair amount of studies to get you formally prepared for the MCAT

23.Apr.2009 04:50pm
Hi CK
I am unfortunately not familiar with the process of becoming a doctor in India - but the bottom line is if you had good grades, you will have to go through the application process of the medical school where you intend studying - of course they will guide you along the process.
In most countries it is a minimum of 7 years...
Dr Anton

Is a career as a paramedic a good choice? is the pay decent?
ronni

Becoming a paramedic is indeed a great choice with each day full of excitement - salary depends on level of training and experience. The pay is unfortunately not comparable to that of the average doctor.

dear doctor anton
I am want to become a doctor that dosen't involve operating but also dosen't take a long period of time to become one
thank you
gale
22.Apr.2009 12:32am
Well Gale As far as non-surgical disciplines are concerned - consider becoming a physician, radiologist, psychiatrist or neurologist.
Regarding a short study period I'm afraid that even the short residencies are still 3 or 4 years following your 7-8 years of studying to become a doctor!
Dr Anton
19.Apr.2009 02:28pm
Im from the UK but how important are extra-curriculars when applying for med schools?
hopestobeadoctor
19.Apr.2009 03:28pm
Most medical schools - if all equal will choose the candidate who has excelled in leadership, sport, culture, arts etc. and who has done a fair amount of community service of some sorts - especially voluntary hospital service.
But academic excellence is the top item on the selection list...
Dr Anton
19.Apr.2009 10:04am

Hi Unchen
You need excellent grades in maths and as many science subjects as possible (biology, chemistry, physical science etc.)
Eight years.
The answer to your questions are in the following Letters from the Doc...
"So You Want to Be a General Practitioner (Medical Doctor)..." and
"How to Become a Doctor in the United States of America..."
At your age you may also consider working your way through our How to Examine Patients Course and Kit (see shop section)

Greg
19.Apr.2009 11:34am
Hi Greg
There are so many physics priniples associated with the human body and medicine (just to mention a few):
Optics - the eye and vision
Mechanics and leverage - the skeleton and muscles
Viscosity - the flow of blood
Acoustics - the ear and hearing
X-rays - radiology
Also keep in mind that you will be competing with students who do have the "full package".
Dr Anton

17.Apr.2009 02:58pm
Hi Jt
Improve you grades by studying harder/smarter - or whatever it takes.
Do volunteer work at a hospital.
Any other achievements like sport, leadership, cultural etc?
Your entrance to medical school in the final analysis revolves around your MCAT and "premed" degree results.
Dr Anton

15.Apr.2009 05:31am
Doc in medicine is it correct if you persue it because of money or passion?
Nosicelo
15.Apr.2009 12:55pm

I would say passion - keep in mind money is important, but should not be the primary motive...
Dr Anton
14.Apr.2009 12:17pm
And also, would it help or hinder me if I were to major in something other than a natural science? Political Science for instance? I know med schools want to be diverse, but is that too far off the mark?

The bottom line is: Universities don't have to be lenient - medicine is highly competitive and there are just so many good excellent grade candidates to choose from.
Dr Anton
13.Apr.2009 05:22pm
"Chemistry and maths are more important than biology and physics if you want to become a doctor." You said this in one of your prev posts. IS that really true?! Because I'm not very good at math! What do you need math/phy for?
ann
14.Apr.2009 02:58pm
Ann
Chemistry: The human body is one giant highly complicated chemical factory - to understand the human body one needs to understand the chemistry behind it!
Mathematics: Teaches you logic thinking - essential to making a good diagnosis and you need maths to do applied chemistry and physics.
