Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Maths.

Dr Anton

09.Jun.2009 10:55am

Hey doc iam in high school and id like to become a doctor one day but im doing maths literacy

Lucia

09.Jun.2009 12:30pm

Lucia
You will need mathematics (algebra etc.) and science (physics and chemistry) as well.

Dr Anton

08.Jun.2009 06:24pm

I was wondering can a Maltese student take the MCAT exam? If yes at what age and what should be done afterwards for a good career as a surgeon? Thank You for all your help :)

Jonathan

09.Jun.2009 12:34pm

As far as I know there shouldn't be a problem - but to get entrance into a USA medical school you will need a US recognized 4 year B degree as well. And you will have to get a students VISA. Most MCAT candidates are in their early to mid twenties.

Dr Anton

08.Jun.2009 05:55pm

This website is incredibly helpful so first off, thank you for that!
I'm positive i want to be a surgeon. I have a tremendous love for biology, anatomy, physiology..but, ridiculously, i am still slightly squeamish! Resetting bones (the sound)makes me feel ill! And i sometimes get a bit queasy watching surgeries online. Should i think about another career?

rebecca

09.Jun.2009 12:41pm

Rebecca - not at all. You have the most important requirement for becoming a surgeon - a love for the subject. The other things will follow. It is natural to feel somewhat uneasy when witnessing surgery and blood things - but that will disappear predictably in time!
Thank you for your kind words!

Dr Anton

07.Jun.2009 03:22pm

what subjects shall i chose in year 9 to become a dentist?

G K

09.Jun.2009 12:44pm

I would go for maths and as many science subjects as possible - ad an art subject if you can...
See:
"TIPS TOWARDS BECOMING A DENTIST"

Dr Anton

07.Jun.2009 10:30am

what subjects do you need in GCSE to become a childrens doctor?
and do u have to be cleaver in primary and secondry school to become a doctor

G K

09.Jun.2009 12:37pm

Hi G K
Go for the maths and science subjects like chemistry, physical science and biology.
You need to get good grades at GCSE and A-levels - so study hard and ensure excellent grades to optimize your chances...

Dr Anton

06.Jun.2009 08:05pm

Whats the minimum GCSE grade in maths needed to become a doctor? & what qualifications would you be looking for if you aspire to become a paramedic?

Alasdair

07.Jun.2009 02:37am

I can give you a short answer, but this link does answer in a lot of detail - have a look...
"GRADES NEEDED TO BECOME A DOCTOR"
I am unsure about the requirements towards becoming a paramedic.

Dr Anton

06.Jun.2009 04:35pm

Also, should I take triple science (if I take it, then I'll probably flunk German, but I don't aspire to achieve much from German anyway & I know that sounds bad, but I'm willing to do it if it helps me get into med school) &would triple science in any way increase my chances of getting a place in med school?

Alasdair

06.Jun.2009 05:27pm

Yes indeed - tripple science is the way to go.

Dr Anton

06.Jun.2009 04:33pm

thanks doc, I was in an excelled group for maths , science & english among others last year, but I dosed about too much in science & have consequently gone down into a middle set, the same goes for english (I am 14) but stayed in excel for maths. This year I've worked hard in science & have achieved my targets & have beaten them in english, but with maths I have still done well but I am constantly forgetting the methods in exams. I am happily working at grade B gcse but how should I revise?

Alasdair

06.Jun.2009 05:26pm

Alasdair the only thing that worked for me in maths was practice, practice and practice. Previous year's questionnaires were quite helpful - and getting help from teachers on the wrong answers.

Dr Anton

05.Jun.2009 02:07am

I love helping people which is the main reason why I want to be a doctor. But I not good at math at all. I'm average in science. But I just figure I wanted to be a doctor so I'm working on it. Have any study tips for someone who has a hard time keeping logic in their head? Also what does a doctor of internal medcine study? People give me all different answers. And I like know all the fields before choosing. Thank you for your time.

Lucy

06.Jun.2009 03:43am

Hi Lucy
The sad news is that you have to excel in science and maths. You will have to look at doing a structured study method course and you will need diagnostics followed by remedial maths in my opinion.
Love helping other people? Have you considers professional nursing? It is really a great caring profession filled with compassion...
Internal medicine - the NON-SURGICAL study, diagnosis and management of metabolic diseases like diabetes as well as the organs of the body cavities e.g. liver (hepatitis)

I am 13 years old and i really want to be a doctor in the er ,but someday I really want a family. What position in the er as a physician would have steady hours.Although I could be flexible if i had to with hours?? and also does volenteer work at hospitals look good on applications? thanks

cay

06.Jun.2009 03:34am

Cay
Becoming an ER doctor and steady hours is an oxymoron. But then one do work in shifts - giving a fair amount of flexibility re hours.
Yes volunteering at a hospital does look good on a CV - see:
"TIPS TOWARDS BECOMING A DOCTOR"

PLEASE HELP ME you do not know how much it means to me to become a doctor?

noura abdi

04.Jun.2009 04:50pm

The bottom line is you need to do and get excellent grades in "tripple science" at A-levels. Discuss options with your career guidance teacher - even if you need to invest an extra year...

Dr Anton

03.Jun.2009 06:56pm

I am 23yrs old, and I left school with 2 GCSEs in maths&drama, despite doing well in all my mock exams, I did not take them in the end. I currently have a good job, but would love to become a doctor, A&E, or perhaps a gynecologist, I don't know yet. Howev

anita

04.Jun.2009 01:08am

Hi Anita
You can still become a doctor - but you will have to do some serious catch-up on the science side. You need excellent grades in subjects like chemistry, physics, biology and maths on A-levels...

Dr Anton

02.Jun.2009 10:46pm

I desected a rat in biology today, and I want to be a doctor of some sort. Should I think otherwise if I felt a bit nauseous from that?

ronni

03.Jun.2009 01:42pm

Ronni not at all.
One gets used to blood and guts over a period of time!
Go for it!

in response to my last question. the cc they have agreements with in state universitys like virginia tech and uva where you can transfer there after 2 years at cc and finsh up the last 2 years at the university.

johnny

01.Jun.2009 05:15pm

That's great! Just remember that there are certain premed MCAT requirents:
A year of Freshman Chemistry along with the appropriate laboratory courses
A year of Organic Chemistry along with laboratory courses
A year of Biology along with laboratory courses
A year of Physics along with laboratory courses
A year of English
A year of Calculus or other advanced math classes, including Statistics

01.Jun.2009 06:28am

Hi there Doc!! thanks for ur tip, i just wanted to clearify when u say speak the infor how many times do u do that and write it out? i learn the exact same way and just need reassurance sorry. How many times do u view it per week

Cc

01.Jun.2009 04:40pm

Hi Cc
I would learn a section and then verbalize in my own words once or twice - important info I would then write out or summarize - in key-word format - using this later on to revise my work before tests etc.

Dr Anton

01.Jun.2009 04:51am

What classes should I take in junior college to transfer to a 4 year university and become a doctor. Also I have a ged.

johnny

01.Jun.2009 04:34pm

Hi Johnny
It depends on how the 4 year university accepts your credits. The university may not take all of your credits, which means you will have to retake the 4 year university's equivalent to the classes you have already taken.
I would strongly advise you to speak with a guidance counselor at the CC and the university to see how your classes would transfer.

31.May.2009 03:21pm

Medical school admission is competitive. You need to have a strong GPA - a GPA above 3.5 is preferrable.

Dr Anton

31.May.2009 09:04am

I want to become a doctor so badly but i have trouble getting great grades such as A*? can u suggest hints on studying habits for bio n chem please? hw did u study? if u dnt mind me asking. Thanks. Cc

Cc

31.May.2009 03:19pm

Hi Cc
If you want to study medicine, a formal study - method course will be imperative in my opinion. I studies mainly by writing and speaking the information - but it varies from person to person.

Dr Anton

30.May.2009 07:40pm

what are the minimum GCSE grades required to become a doctor?- I think I'm doing well in science, but with maths i'm in a higher group & work fine in lessons but forget topics covered when we're doing exams (I do revise though)

Alasdair

31.May.2009 01:45pm

I would say mostly A's. It is only at A-levels that they look at subject specific strengths. At GCSE level you must aim for at least 5 A - A*s - especially in science and maths and an English grade of C or above.

Dr Anton

30.May.2009 02:19am

Science (chemistry, physics and biology) and maths - most medical schools in Canada prefer a Science major B degree.

Dr Anton

29.May.2009 04:22am

Hi

I wanted to know if a person from pakistan who has no previous medicial education wants to become a doctor in the UK, what qualification would he/she require, assuming this person has a degree in another subject say economics

Kamran

30.May.2009 03:02pm

Since the economic recession, most UK medical schools are filling posts almost exclusively with British citizens. You may have a chance if you first get a B.Honours Science degree in the UK. The British high commissioner in Pakistan will be able to assist you with information about student VISAs etc.

I want to become a pediatrictian and i know i have to take science and math classes but what other classes do i need to take such as nursing when i get into collge?

Moni

28.May.2009 02:52pm

Hi Moni
Of course you first need to qualify as a doctor - then specialize or do residency in pediatrics.
In the USA you will have to do a BDegree (some special requirements re: ther MCAT)
Then med school...
Have a look at:
"How to Become a Pediatrician"

hi iam currently at high school and i am an avrage student at maths how do i get better

lola

28.May.2009 03:05pm

Lola
Difficulties with maths often results from missing a basic principle - so you will have to go for special/extra classes.
More hours will improve your marks but you have to get a diagnostic maths test for remedial classes.

Dr Anton

27.May.2009 11:58am

hi, i was wondering if it is possible to become a doctor if i get a few b's in high school...although my other grades are all a's

Sohaib

28.May.2009 03:10pm

Hi Sohaib
The sad news is that yes it is possible - but in reality very unlikely due to the fierce competition (too many students with just A's and A*s)

Dr Anton

27.May.2009 11:15am

Hello Dr. Aton
I am planning to study Math Problem Solving, Chemistry and Biology as 3 of 5 my choices next year in my Sixth Form. Will it be essential for me to study Physic to later on become a GP?

Junaid

28.May.2009 03:13pm

Junaid
Yes - make peace with having to study physics - or your competition with physics will get preference for selection.

Dr Anton

27.May.2009 12:42am

Hey doc,
I was wondering if a high school dropout who has gotten a GED should go about becoming a M.D.?
What classes should I take in Community College, How likely am I to get into med school, any additional info is appreciated.

Charles Brown

28.May.2009 03:18pm

Charles
Yes - if you study hard and smart you can.
Do as many science subjects in CC - like Physics, Chemistry, Calculus and Biology
Truth is med school is competitive - you will need good grades doing a BDegree - and a high score when doing the MCAT.
Browse through my letters regarding becoming a doctor etc.

Dr Anton

26.May.2009 10:05am

I'm 24 yrs old and want to become a pediatrician. I'll be starting at square one with college, do you think it's too late for me to do this?

28.May.2009 03:07pm

You do stand a good chance in my opoinion - but you will have to look at ALL the MCAT requirements on the MCAT website.

Dr Anton

25.May.2009 03:50pm

Thanks again.
Oh sorry, one more thing well probably not.. anyways.. Im think of taking lv4 chem (university) in grade 12, because I have an awesome chem teacher that'll be teaching me and probably 10 others. Is this a good idea?

chris10

25.May.2009 04:00pm

Dr Anton

25.May.2009 02:51pm

Thanks Doctor and I actually live in Canada.
One more question would I need to take lv2(plants and animals) bio or can I just go to lv3 (human stuff)?

chris10

25.May.2009 03:06pm

Hi Chris10
I personally would recommend that you go for a broad base - thus lv2. You will have plenty of time in med school to study human anatomy and physiology in great detail!! Canada works more like the USA - see:
"How to Become a Doctor in the United States of America..."

Dr Anton

25.May.2009 01:51pm

24.May.2009 12:25pm

Hi Chris10

Our site will soon differentiate between UK, USA, and Australia etc. Looks like you are in the UK (?)
With an obvious affinity for chemistry I would recommend a B.Sc with main subject chemistry, then add other science subjects like physics/zoology and of course maths/applied maths - always a good choice. (Keep in mind the choices will vary from university to university - so I am unable to give exact answers - rather basic guidelines). Trust it helps!

Dr Anton

23.May.2009 09:18am

(UK)after a 5 year medicine degree how long does it take until i can practice as a qualified peadiatrician on my own unsupervised?what happens during the time between the degree and qualification (junior doctor...?)

DipDip

23.May.2009 01:15pm

Hi DipDip
I have it that you have to do 2 years as a junior doctor and if you are lucky enough to get a post as a registrar in Paediatrics - that will add another 4 years - so you are looking at a minimum of 11 years (5+2+4)- but in reality probably more.

Dr Anton

23.May.2009 08:42am

Hi doc, im doing my gcses but am in too minds about doing additional science, could i still get in to uni to do a med degree without a science gsce?...

Livvy

23.May.2009 01:10pm

The answer is no. You not only have to take all your science subjects (biology, physics and chemistry) - you have to excel in these subjects like A and A*

Dr Anton

23.May.2009 07:19am

Can I study medicine and become on to being a GP without having to get too involve in looking into people's body as I tend to be a little uncomfortable looking into someone's body due to their flesh.

Junaid

23.May.2009 01:07pm

Junaid - keep it to a non-clinical degree like medical sciences or medical research.
Clinical medicine is all about examining and studying the human body and looking up and down into bodies!

Dr Anton

22.May.2009 11:51pm

Hi doc, Im currently in high school and wondering if i need to take physic in grade 11,& 12 or just wait untill university?

Lou

23.May.2009 01:04pm

Unlike one may think, medicine requires a fair understanding of physics.
I would recommend starting as soon as possible - but of course you may leave it for "pre-medical" B degree.

Dr Anton

22.May.2009 07:42pm

I read the requirements from a previous question regarding coming from another country to become a doctor, but are the requirements the same if one is already a doctor in a South American country (Colombia). Thanks.

Deege

23.May.2009 01:00pm

Training in one country and then wanting to practice in another pose a number of problems:
1. General laws and rules regarding immigration and
2. Requirements of the new country's medical board/regulating body.
Apart from masses of administrative load an entrance exam including a language proficiency test is often required.

Dr Anton

22.May.2009 01:25am

what maths skills do i need to become a doctor?????

katee

22.May.2009 02:20pm

To get to Medical School, the Pre-med bachelors program in the USA requires that you take up to Calculus 2.
Maths is imporatant as:
1. The diagnostic process requires advanced skills in problem solving and logic thinking.
2. Doctors use formulas to establish a number of physiological criteria and pharmacological dosages.
3. You need maths to do advanced chemistry and physics.
3.1 You need to understand chemistry to understand the human body (large extremely complicated chemical factory)
3.2 Physiological processes work on the basis of physical laws - and thus the need to understand physics.
4. Maths helps the selection committee to select the sharpest candidates.

Dr Anton

21.May.2009 05:21pm

I am 37 year old engineer with an MS and BS considering a change to the medical field. What advice can you give me to supplement my education and what concerns are there for me as a potential non-traditional medical student.

DocWanttoBe

22.May.2009 02:25pm

Hi
At best - you will be +-48 before you will be a GP doctor. I personally think you waited too long - medical schools will definitely offer posts to the bright 22 year old premed candidate with a high MCAT score.
Have you considered Bio-medical engineering? - this may satisfy both your interest in engineering and in medicine.

Dr Anton

21.May.2009 04:15pm

Thanks Dr.Anton
you mean Med schools in Canada, Caribeean Pakistan places like that ????
What kind of Tests or exams you need to apply to schools in med school like will SAT ACT or MCAT necessary for medical schools.....

sabalava

21.May.2009 04:34pm

...well it will vary from med school to med school. UK - 5 years and admission via UKCAT.
Have a look at:

Dr. Sang

21.May.2009 04:36pm

I think you should look at Ophthalmology/Ophthalmic surgery.
Could be as little as 3 1/2 to 4 days
