thank you so much but the trouble is would i actully get into a good collage and medical school even doe i do bad and get to do wat i want in uni

12.Mar.2009 03:31pm

If you want to go into neoro imaging via the medical route (neurology or neurosurgery) then you will have to study very very hard - see my answer on your previous question below.
You can pursue neuro imaging via the psychology route - but believe me it is also quite competitive!

Dr Anton

12.Mar.2009 02:31pm

hmm yes i understand but is there a chance of me getting into a medical uni coz i want to study neuro imaging

hi doc im in secondary school and i have c to b's so far my grade is kind of low in science do u think i would be able to get in a good collage or medical uni

abidesun

12.Mar.2009 02:13pm

Hi Abidesun
I hate to say this - but becoming a doctor is HIGHLY competitive!
The bottom line is you will have to up your grades to at least A's including maths and science.
Or consider other inroads into medicine like becoming a paramedic, a professional nurse or an alternative medical practitioner.
All of the best!

Dr Anton

12.Mar.2009 01:23pm

Hi im beth im in secondry school and i want to become a doctor! I was wondering what i need to study and what i should choose in my options thanks

Beth

12.Mar.2009 01:50pm

Hi Beth
The rule is to choose maths and science subjects like chemistry, physics and biology.
See the following article:

And consider an online premed course:

12.Mar.2009 11:17am

hey again doc, I wanted to ask if I wanted to become a surgeon, how long will it take? How many years in university, residency etc.

thanks.

Vim

12.Mar.2009 11:41am

Hi again Vim
First, you need a 4 years undergraduate degree (in almost anything, but keep in mind that you'll need certain science courses as med school pre-requisites). Medical school is 4 years, followed by residency - your training after med school. Surgical residencies vary from 5 - 7 years. You can add more time on if you want to practice a surgical subspecialty.

I am in my first year at college and would really like a career as a surgeon, how would i go about this and what subjects/grades would i need to eventually become a consultant?

11.Mar.2009 04:47pm

wow seems interesting, my current job has lots of interaction with lots of people too. I have another question for you. If you are such a great doctor how do you find time to answer all these people's questions?

Navjot Dhillon

12.Mar.2009 10:39am

Am I a great doctor?
Regarding my time - well I keep 5-10 minutes open for this purpose most days.

Dr Anton

11.Mar.2009 03:22pm

Thankss doc ;)
But whats a MCAT?
Do you do this at college or uni?

Lauzz

11.Mar.2009 03:38pm

Lauzz
MCAT = Medical College Admission Test
You prepare and study for this during your Premedical B Degree at univ.
MCAT is a program of the Association of American Medical Colleges

Dr Anton

11.Mar.2009 09:45am

hey Dr anton
one of the main questions i have for you is that do you enjoy your job?
and if so why? what part of the job do you love the most? is there any challenges you have while being a doctor?

Navjot Dhillon

11.Mar.2009 02:38pm

Hi Navjot
Yes, I enjoy my job - to be honest I enjoy life very much - it is such a privilege to learn new things and experience exciting things every single day! My job combines intellectual challenges, practical applications, and interaction with other people - that makes it great!
I love helping people in pain or to assist in emergencies.
Being a doctor offers multiple challenges EVERY DAY!

Dr Anton

10.Mar.2009 07:32pm

Right, so i'm in year 9 and i'm having great difficulty in picking which subjects i should take to become a doctor. I can pick 2 out of german, history, geography, art, drama, health and social care, ICT and PE. Which should i pick?

Lauzz

11.Mar.2009 02:31pm

Hi Lauzz
Pick any of those...
The general rule is to pick as many science/maths subjects as possible.
Entrance to medical school is primarily based on your pre medical B-degree, and your MCAT results.

Hi, I was wondering how batteries are chosen for medical apparatus. Is there specific brands/types hospitals look for or is there a check list for the batteries being tested?

for me i believe the purpose of life is you live your life and just be happy. dont make life more complicat then it is and do what makes you happy, and what makes me happy is seeing smiles on other peoples face knowing you helped

tony

07.Mar.2009 05:23am

You have to discover your unique purpose and destiny in life - and it's much more than finding a career that suits you. You need to reach your purpose and destiny in all the areas of your life - spiritually, family and socially, career wise, mentally, financially, physically, recreational - and to reach a balance between all these areas. You want more than personal happiness - you want joy and fulfillment in life - and that comes from giving yourself to other people and dedicating your life to God.

Dr Anton

07.Mar.2009 01:32am

Very interested in the course and kits. Is there a certificate that comes with the kit for those students that complete the course? If so is it included in the kit or something that has to be applied for?

itsy

07.Mar.2009 05:09am

Hi Itsy
The Foundation Course has a certificate included - we recommend that you ask your life sciences teacher to sign it after an assessment. Alternatively we will test your knowledge via a web link and I will mail you a certificate signed by me. If you want high school science credits - rather follow this link and make it count as academic credits

Navjot Dhillon

06.Mar.2009 04:22pm

Hi NJ
Three things are required to succeed in anything in life:
1. Talent (the ability) 2. A dream and 3. Hard work (persistently)
I personally wanted to become an electrical engineer, but changed my mind in grade 12 to go for the medical field - my dream followed this decision. In my experience most people fail because of a lack of 'hard work' rather than 'no dream' or 'no talent'.
Regarding your other questions...
Your grade 10 average of 90 definitely means that you are smart enough.
Harvard bases entrance to their medical school mainly on an entrance B Degree as well as the MCAT results.

Dr Anton

05.Mar.2009 10:40pm

do you believe it was worth it all the studying and everything you went to to become a doctor? was it all worth it?

tony

06.Mar.2009 11:30am

Tony
Yes it was - a fulfilling career, overcoming so many challenges. Helping so many people - and sharing in their joy and sadness. Living your dream and fulfilling your life purpose...
By the way - my question previously: Do you have a well worked out plan for your life? Do you know your purpose in life?

hey doc. I live in South Africa and is in matric now. I really want to go to med school! Its my dream for 5years now and I believe I was called to do it!BUT the selection is verry tough here. What must I do if they dont choose me?

Dezi

01.Mar.2009 02:48pm

Hi Dezi
Selection to medical school is tough all over the world.
Consider doing a B.Degree in science (BSc) or medical sciences - like BMedSci - your chances being selected will be extremely good with such a degree.

Dr Anton

28.Feb.2009 10:31pm

I've read a few bits about the match and the scramble, but I'm still not entirely sure how it works. If you don't get a position you want...not being matched to a surgical program... This sounded a lot better in my head...

Xasen

01.Mar.2009 04:14am

The process of allocating individual students to residency programs differs from medical school to med school. In short there are so many posts in each program, and it very seldom matches all students' preferences. Students need to indicate their first second and third choices - and then the administrators match the posts to the preferences - some get their fist and some their second or even third choice - occasionally a number of students' names needs to go into "hat", get scrambled, and then drawn into residency program.

Rudy

28.Feb.2009 01:33am

Hi Rudy
You are really asking a difficult question - as there is simply no easy answer. We all get those moments and times when we find it difficult to focus - and self-discipline is the only but hard answer - you have to really force yourself. This divides the men from the mice.
But be sure that you have a well defined purpose and destination. Use your imagination often - see yourself as a qualified doctor, and visualize - make a poster of you as a medical professional.
