would it hurt your chances if you go to a junior college then transfer to a 4 year?

Hi Johnson
I don't think so - but lets pose your question to a pre-med forum... follow this link: Premed Forum

What is the process of getting into med school, and what is the lowest possible GPA you can have to get in?
johnson
22.Mar.2009 12:44am
Do a 4 year B degree (some specific requirement for complying with medical school premed requirements)
See: Become a Doctor
Write your MCAT exam
Apply for selection to a number of medical schools
Medical school admissions are competitive, so you need to have a strong GPA. A GPA above 3.5 is preferable. I would say 3.3 would be a minimum.

20.Mar.2009 11:47pm
Is it common for current docters to not be able to handle blood and injuries at the beggining of med school, and be able to tolerate it later on?
kim
21.Mar.2009 03:09am
It is very common.
I almost fainted when I saw the first abscess being drained - had to lie down in the OT for a while - (embarrassment!!) - but weeks after this incident I drained abscesses myself without blinking an eye...

what happens if you want to become a surgeon but arent matched to a surgical residency? can you do a surgical fellowship?
Arizona
20.Mar.2009 12:11pm
Hi Arizona
I am not perfectly sure.
I have it that you are basically left with one of 2 choices:
1. Spend a year in a preliminary medicine slot and re-apply the next year or
2. Look at another specialty
Dr Anton
19.Mar.2009 11:31pm
Hi Dr Anton, steve again can you be able to tolerate surgery after a certain period of time?
Thanks

Yes Steve - after quite a short period of time - a couple of weeks at the most!

how did you study for your tets in college?
do you stil remember the material?
ish

I learn best by hearing facts - so I studied by speaking the information to myself.
Well yes - surprisingly much - but after 25 years some of it has become vague!
Dr Anton
19.Mar.2009 12:46pm
why do you need maths to become a doctor
dr anton
19.Mar.2009 01:55pm
Hi there
1. The diagnostic process requires advanced skills in problem solving and logic thinking.
2. Doctors use formulas to establish a number of physiological criteria and pharmacological dosages.
3. You need maths to do advanced chemistry and physics.
3.1 You need to understand chemistry to understand the human body (large extremely complicated chemical factory)
3.2 Physiological processes work on the basis of physical laws - and thus the need to understand physics.
4. Maths helps the selection committee to select the sharpest candidates.

hello doctor, i have been looking into biomedical engineering and i wanted to know what you think about this career? Is it interesting and what kind of diffrent things do they do?
Thanks :)
Douja
19.Mar.2009 07:27am
Biomedical engineering is indeed a great career to follow!
The design of atificial joints, Dental implants, and other prostheses like artificial heart valves to mention but a few.
The design of medical equipment like CT and MRI scanners, anesthetic machines and
New medical applications in nano technology, medical LASER machines etc...

Not being good at anything is subject to change! Take it as a challenge - put in the effort and hours and become good in chemistry!
Dr Anton
18.Mar.2009 11:44pm
Do you have to be able to tolerate surgery to become a doctor who doesn't perform surgery?
steve
19.Mar.2009 12:55am
One will have to do at least a bit of (practical) surgery during your training as a doctor, and all the theory, as surgery is one of the foundation subjects of medicine.
But if you become a physician or any other non-surgical specialist you won't be doing any surgery in your practice.

I want to become a doctor, and I am entering the first year of college, but I am not sure what I should major for undergrad? What would prepare me the most? I've heard I can major in economics, but wouldn't that be a waste?
m.f.
17.Mar.2009 03:14pm
This is quite debatable - I would recommend that you major in a subject that will "switch you on" the most!
Will e.g. biochemistry do it for you? Probably not...
Dr Anton

Hi Doctor,

For obvious reasons A's are preferable - but in the final analysis entry to med schools is based on the results of a B Degree as well as the Medical Schools Admissions test (MCAT)

The academic registration section of universities do have brochures with lists of scholarships and bursaries.
Very few scholarships for B degree before med school and med school bursaries usually based on academic excellence.

15.Mar.2009 12:59am
Hi Abdullah
It really depends on your specific age - medical schools are somewhat hesitant to select older candidates - due to their limited professional career lifespan.
In general there are no shortcuts. Have a look at:
Become a Doctor in the USA
A couple of universities cuts off a year by offering a combined degree:

Is it true that if you dont score a high SAT score you arent worthy to be in the medical field? What is you are # 47 out of your 360 high school class.. Does that matter? or is college more important??
Douja
15.Mar.2009 12:42am
Hi Douja
Medicine is highly competitive, and the best SAT score possible is to your advantage. But it isn't always the highest SAT candidates that successfully become doctors - and vice versa.
Also keep in mind that acceptance into med school is primarily based on your B Degree and MCAT results.
YOU ARE WORTHY!

15.Mar.2009 12:36am
Getting the best possible grades in high school is always a good foundation to buid your medical career on.
Acceptance into med school is primarily based on your B Degree and MCAT results.
You first need to qualify as a doctor before doing a pediatrics residency.
Pick as many science/maths subjects as possible.

13.Mar.2009 02:33pm
The British medical training system works different to the American system - one can study medicine on the basis of your A-levels results as far as I know. You will have to up your grades to A.s.
Alternatively do a B science degree and then apply for a place in medical school. I am not aware of any university doing premed-med school together. Also see:
